Based near 'Royal' Tetbury at the gateway to the Cotswolds, we are one hour and twenty minutes from London by train to the nearest train station (Kemble, 8 miles away). Located at Long Newnton by the Wiltshire ~ Gloucestershire border, we are approximately 45 minutes drive from Bristol, Bath, Swindon, Cheltenham and Gloucester and an hour from Oxford and Reading.
Learning to carriage drive is a wonderful experience. It’s good fun to learn and gives you a fantastic sense of achievement when you master it.
No previous experience of horses is necessary. Non-riders often pick up the art of carriage driving more quickly than experienced horse riders.
Our aim is to provide training in an enjoyable, safe way to produce carriage drivers who respect equines, carriage drive with courtesy to road users and have a passion for the sport. Photos courtesy of Hazel Woodbridge.
OUR APPROACH TO HORSES
Our approach to handling horses is the ‘natural horsemanship’ way. Body language and voice are used to communicate and build trust. A good carriage driving horse will frequently flick an ear back to listen to you. We also show you how to listen to what the carriage horses are telling you in return!

A First: Woman horse rides and carriage drives in 52 counties in one year
For what is believed to be the first time ever, Stephanie Dale has ridden or carriage driven in fifty-two counties in the four countries of the UK in one year. Gloucestershire based Stephanie Dale has just completed the feat to raise funds for Riding and Carriage Driving for the Disabled (RDA) and the Oak and Furrows Wildlife Rescue Centre near Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Ms Dale said, ‘I decided to mark the start of my fifth decade last September, by doing something which I don’t think anyone else has ever done before. Horse riding and carriage driving in 52 counties has been a real challenge physically and has been an incredible experience whilst supporting worthwhile charities.’ Her venture has taken her to five counties in Scotland, including riding in Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland, four counties in Northern Ireland and four in Wales with the rest in England.
Thirty-seven of the counties have been ridden or carriage driven with Roger, a 19 years old Clydesdale cross cob. ‘I also hired horses to ride in far-flung places from Northern Ireland, to Cornwall, Cumbria to Hyde Park, and have met some incredible and inspiring people along the way’ said Ms Dale. Ed Bracher, Chief Executive of RDA says ‘Stephanie’s achievement is incredible, her drive and motivation has taken her through 52 counties in just one year. For the past 40 years, RDA has been providing riding and carriage driving services to more than 25,000 people with disabilities and as we celebrate our 40th anniversary we are pleased that Stephanie has chosen to support us with this remarkable feat.’
Louise Brockbank from the Oak and Furrows Wildlife Rescue charity says ‘Stephanie has, over the years, raised money in various ways but this has to be the most unique, to ride and carriage drive over 50 counties is an amazing achievement and what a fantastic way to celebrate such a momentous birthday. We would like to thank Roger too, as he faithfully accompanied Stephanie on all her adventures some of which had their scary moments.’
